Get Ready for Football Season with the Nike Air Zoom Turf, nike air zoom turf barry sanders
Barry Sanders had a legendary NFL career, and most fans would say that it ended far too soon. He has since been inducted into the college and professional football hall of fames as well as being named one of the top 10 best NFL players all of time.
That is what averaging 1,500 rushing yards throughout your career will do for you. With all that being said, all of us still wish Barry could have played longer. But you can’t be mad at him for walking away while he was still young and healthy. His football legacy will live forever, and so will the shoes he ran in.
The Nike Air Zoom Turf was inspired by shoes Sanders wore in the 1996 season and are one of the most popular football trainers ever. This particular colorway will have you feeling like Barry back in ‘96 with the white, metallic silver, black and photo blue scheme — very consistent with the Detroit Lions uniform colors.
You may not be as quick as him, but you can at least look just as fresh breaking these out this summer. With players starting to report for OTAs and the season rapidly approaching, these classic football kicks will have you ready to hit the gridiron or at least be ready to watch some football when the time comes.

Among many other things, Barry Sanders is known as the most elusive running back of all-time. Between 1996 and 1997, Sanders enjoyed two of his most productive years in the league, including a 2053-yard '97 campaign with a 128.3 per game average. In those seasons, Sanders did most of his damage in the Nike Air Zoom Turf, wearing both cleated and turf versions as he raced into the record books.
One of the Air Zoom Turf variations Sanders wore on the field was supported by an Air Jordan 11 sole. At the time, players enjoyed the way the sole performed on artificial turf and it was fairly common to see the model itself on the field. Eastbay actually sold the Air Zoom Turf with the 11 sole (in addition to the standard version), so you'll see older pairs and samples pop up on the auction block from time to time.

Other notable differences:
-OGs didnt have a blue front toe piece
-OG strap was all gray
-Laces shouldve been White
But yeah, the small color differences don't really matter. What made this flop was the missing carbon fiber piece as someone already mentioned here.
The black pair is very similar:
- OGs seemed to have an all leather upper. Retros had cheap synthetic leather combined with cheap synthetic nubuck.
-OGs had a black base to the see through OUTSOLE
-OGs didnt have anything on the tongue. Retros a prominent swoosh. Then you can include the missing carbon fiber piece too
This is confusing. I realize the main differences with the retro include the strap color, no CF on the midsole inserts & the blue mud guard carried thru the toe cap but there are TWO versions of the 2007 retro, BOTH of which surface frequently. The 100% Authentic pair I own & rock varies slightly from the one shown above, in that it has:
*A White sock liner, Not black;
*The midsole 'wave' is navy blue, NOT black.
*The laces are navy blue, Not black.
*The Swooshes are Silver on the strap & the toe, Not navy like on the retro pictured.

Apparently Nike couldn't make up their mind on how this shoe should look as clearly, there are 2 different versions of this retro, at least in this specific "Sanders" CW. Interesting.

The newest edition of the Nike Air Zoom Turf comes with a white leather base that gets divided by a photo blue overlay that wraps all the way around the sneaker and climbs up the tongue. Metallic silver hits the shoe on its strap that goes over the laces to provide you with a better fit. Black hits parts of the midsole and runs down to the ice blue turf outsole. All together we'd say this colorway gives the Nike classic a real strong look that won't overpower your outfit but will make people stop and stare as you go by.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Nike would have released a pair of exclusive shoes designed specifically to honor what many consider to be one of – if not THE – best running backs in the history of the NFL, Mr. Barry Sanders.
An absolute legend that played for the Detroit Lions and the kind of “feature back” that absolutely destroyed running records in the NFL during his all too short career, when Nike first released the Nike Air Zoom Turf Cross Training sneakers all the way back in 1996 to honor this amazing athlete they became some of the best selling shoes the company had ever released – ranking right up there with Air Jordans.
Unfortunately, for more than a decade after that initial release it was absolutely impossible to get your hands on a pair of brand-new Barry Sanders shoes unless you are willing to separate with a king’s ransom. Sneaker heads all over the world snapped up as many pairs of these shoes as humanly possible, and very rarely – if ever – did these Barry Sanders sneakers ever make it to market.
When they did it wasn’t at all uncommon for the prices to be in the high five big years, all because of the sneaker head culture and the rarity of these shoes to begin with.

Today you’re going to be able to snap up a peer of these legendary sneakers for about the same price you’d spend on a set of brand-new running shoes (any we’re between $100 and $150), though the original collectors addition very Sanders shoes still fetch five figures without any difficulty whatsoever.
For the most part, the brand-new Air Zoom cross training shoes are pretty much identical to the original Barry Sanders sneakers that were released back in 1996. There are, of course, a handful of major changes to not only the design of the shoes but also to the types of materials that have been used to put them together.
Nike has come a long way since those early days, and though you won’t find any of Nike’s proprietary fabrics like FlyWire on display here (these are still made out of leather and that it materials like the old school versions were), the quality of the fabrics is absolutely top-notch which lends to some very impressive durability – especially if you plan on using these sneakers the way they were intended to in the first place.
Color options are limited, but that makes sense
The original Barry Sanders sneakers were unveiled in 1996 with a single color way – they used in the exact same colors that the Detroit Lions wore on their uniforms (blue, silver, white, gray, and black).
The new version of these sneakers take advantage of the exact same color scheme (in an almost identical pattern as well), but to you’ll also have the opportunity to get your hands on Barry Sanders shoes that also show off the colors that they are more when he was playing for Oklahoma State.
These decidedly modernized versions of the original Nike Air Zoom Turf Cross Training are a lot more like the kinds of “half throwback” designs that Nike is putting out these days than anything else, but that doesn’t mean that they still don’t “steal” a lot of inspiration from the original Barry Sanders shoes.
A little bit more “chunky” comment quite a bit more modern, and with a unique color way and pattern designed to showcase the Oklahoma State colors – orange and black with splashes of gray and white – these particular shoes are likely to become even more collectible than the remakes of the original version.
Some people have complained a little bit that it’s not possible to customize the sneakers the way you can customize most every other Nike release, but it’s not that there isn’t a good reason behind the color weight limitations placed upon these products.
After all, these are tribute sneakers through and through. Though they are designed to be worn as fashion pieces, they are collectors’ items through and through, and they were conceived of the two really honor the Barry Sanders legacy and they do so by showcasing the colors of the football teams that he was most successful with.

You’ll have to be very, very quick on the trigger (and it might not hurt to call ahead to your local Nike shop to see if they can set a pair of side for you), otherwise you’re going to end up paying a real premium if you decide to purchase Barry Sanders shoes on the secondary market.
Remember what we mentioned earlier – the original version (the 1996 version) of these Barry Sanders sneakers went for five figures easily on sites like eBay and on sneaker head collector forums all over the Internet.
Though it’s unlikely that these sneakers will command those top-tier prices just yet, the odds are pretty good that it’s not going to take all that long for collectors to mark up their Barry Sanders sneakers as skyhigh has humanly possible. Especially when they know that the demand is there and people will pay these crazy prices!
As highlighted above, these shoes are going to drop in the middle of summer (July 26) so you’ll want to be quick on the trigger. The Nike Air Zoom Turf Cross Training 2 shoes can be purchased on sites like Amazon and regular prices (anywhere between $70 and $150), and you don’t necessarily have to go crazy trying to get your hands on those Detroit Lions colored shoes just yet.
Because Nike is pumping them out left and right the demand really isn’t there (not as much as the special Oklahoma State color way, anyway), but even still you might want to grab a pair that you can wear and another brand-new pair to leave in the box and set aside for 10 years or more.
Jordan isn’t the only one to make a splash
The amazing thing about sneaker heads is that they are just now starting to branch out into other collectible versions of shoes, rather than focusing predominantly on the Jordans that most of them used to go crazy over exclusively.
90s kicks are definitely back in fashion (that’s for sure), and retro inspired remakes of old favorites are quickly becoming go to purchases for those that want to make sure that they don’t miss out on the “next big thing” in the collectors world in the future.
These Barry Sanders shoes are definitely well worth adding to your collection, especially since most of us aren’t ever going to have the opportunity to slide our feet into a pair of brand-new original Nike Air Zoom Turf Cross Training from 96.
These remakes are the next best thing, and if you have the opportunity to get your hands on a or two of the Oklahoma State color way (with the number 21 on the heel) make sure that you leap at the opportunity to own them.
That definitely isn’t ever going to be the kind of collectible sneaker purchase you ever regret, that’s for sure!
Barry Sanders was – and still is – considered to be amongst the most elusive and dazzling running backs in the history of the NFL. It makes perfect sense then that the shoes made for him by Nike would be just as elusive to get your hands on and just as dazzling to behold.

This past weekend, Nike Training released the first signature sneaker for All-Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson — the CJ81 Trainer. The red, white and blue launch colorway was inspired by Tyrone, Georgia's Sandy Creek High School, where Johnson was a three-year starter and letterman in football.
