Enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this year, Gary Payton was one of the best defenders, trash talkers, and point guards in NBA history. In his time in the league Payton was known for being one of the toughest defenders to play against Michael Jordan, as well as being one half of the original and self-proclaimed “Lob City” duo featuring himself and Shawn Kemp in Seattle. Payton also made waves with his sneaker game during his time in the league. All of the previously mentioned strengths lead to his own kicks with Nike in 1998 – the Nike Air Zoom Flight 98. Those kicks, named after Payton's nickame “The Glove,” will be reissued this weekend in his on-court colorway. “The Glove” takes the nickname to heart – wrapping a basketball shoe in a stylized bootie with a diagonal zipper to seal in the laces and ankle. For those not familiar with the original shoe, it is very similar to the bootie of the Jordan XX8. While the shoe is sleek and simple zipped up, many choose to wear the outer layer folded down, especially off-court. A folded down bootie reveals a mostly mesh basketball shoe with a stylized upper and lots of ankle padding. Along the shoe's heel reads “The Glove” just so you know who's kicks these are.

The Nike Air Zoom Flight “The Glove” drops at Foot Locker, House of Hoops by Foot Locker, and Footlocker.com (starting at 8:00 am EDT) at Footlocker.com on Saturday, October 5, for $145. Check the Launch Locator to see which stores will have this release.

Sneak Peak: Nike Air Zoom Flight '98, nike air zoom flight 98

Every year, hundreds of basketball sneakers are produced, issued, sold and played in on the hardwood worldwide, and for every year in the NBA, at least one star player has a special, peak season of his career–and the signature shoe that shares in his glory. That’s what Sneak Peak (pun intended) is all about–highlighting players and their sneakers from the past 25 years who shared the spotlight with iconic play and iconic style.

Nike air zoom flight 98

For the time being, the Sneak Peak series will focus on the golden era of the top sig shoes, players, and their best overall seasons, which was approximately between 1994-1997 (the period itself being the literal peak of performance basketball shoes), which I have dubbed “The Wonder Years.”

The ‘97-98 season was another winning season for Gary Payton. The Seattle SuperSonics were the top team in the Western Conference with a 61-21 record. The team had added All-Star power forward Vin Baker to increase its likelihood of winning a championship, and “The Glove” was in his prime. Two seasons off of the SuperSonics' trip to the NBA Finals with the Chicago Bulls, Payton was looking to do some special things. As a major endorser of Nike and wearing some of the best shoes of his day, it was only right that he had a shoe that embodied his namesake and his game.

Nike air zoom flight 98

GP earned The Glove moniker from opposing players and announcers who said that he played defense so tight, that it was as if he was as close to them on the ball as a glove, and the name stuck. Though he slowly came into his own after being drafted as the second overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft, Payton eventually made himself into a perennial All-Star player. With his star shining brightly, the Swoosh factory created for Payton the Nike Air Zoom Flight '98, which was nicknamed the “Air Flight Glove” before Nike eventually bestowed that name upon a later model of signature GP sneakers. A unique shoe that hadn't been seen before, the AZF98 was a mid-cut shoe that was entirely covered by either synthetic leather or full Lycra-Spandex and zipped down the front of the shoe to reveal a bare-bones internal construction that featured the “monkey paw” ankle inversion plates on the side of the ankles. With a curved-cut, medial-side Nubuck rand on the toes and Zoom Air in the heel and forefoot, the AZF98 was one of the premier shoes of the late '90s and was one of the most creative envisionings of a player in sneaker forms.

With one of the strongest and most talented teams in SuperSonics history, GP and the gang rolled high for much of the season while in pursuit to win a title. With many of the SuperSonics on their last legs to seriously challenge for a serious run, losing in the second round of the Playoffs to the L.A. Lakers was especially dissatisfying and the team later disbanded, along with then-head coach George Karl. Payton himself stayed for 4 1/2 more seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, then signing with the Lakers, getting traded to the Boston Celtics (and to the Atlanta Hawks, before being waived and immediately re-signed by Boston), before finishing his NBA career with the Miami Heat.

My personal memories of the Air Zoom Flight '98 were probably grander than the overall reception that the shoe received. One reason for this was that the AZF98 was priced at $120 and was released with a whole gaggle of elite Nike basketball shoes that were comparable in price and more flashy. Secondly, unless you were a tech fanatic about sneaker cushioning and materials, the shoe was very plain to look at, coming in standard black/white and white/black colorways; for me, the thrill of the shoe was not so much the colors, but literally being able to peel the shoe's covering back to reveal “another shoe” beneath. It was probably one of the most underrated shoes made in the late-‘90s, at least to me. Thirdly, soon after the Air Zoom Flight '98 was worn by GP, Nike started issuing more signature and non-signature shoes for him to wear, so the AZF98 quickly fell away from memory (in fact, the best shoe I ever wore was his Air Hawk Flight shoe, that was released back in 1997–easily the lightest and best performing shoe I've played ball in–please retro these, Nike!)…but in June 1998, Payton wore the pre-Gloves on the cover of Issue 26. with his in-game scowl on display.

At this point, though, count on a retro sometime in the unforeseen future. Slickly, the Air Zoom Flight '98 got some love as a hybrid sneaker in the Nike Zoom Flight Club–a premium basketball shoe made for the 2009 NBA Playoffs; and check the specs of the shoe out–the zipper and silhouette is very, very similar to the AZF98, which was one sly fox of a shoe.

I have nothing creative to say… hate when that happens…

Traction – Not bad but not great. Front to back is where you are covered but lateral movements could used some work. Surprisingly, this outcome was the same no matter the court condition or the type of court… I played outdoors in addition to indoors this time around. They provided the best traction on rough outdoor surfaces, anything smooth and you may slip slightly when making lateral movements.

Cushion – I went over the cushion in their final performance teaser and noted that the cushion was nothing special and on par with some of Nike's latest releases featuring Zoom that is difficult to feel. I wound up taking these outdoors and playing with them for about 4 hours and the heat really helped break the cushion in tremendously. It makes me wonder if certain shoes I've reviewed in the past would have the same outcome after playing outdoors for a while but I doubt I'll ever get around to trying it out.

I still wouldn't say the cushion used here is the greatest of all time but it gets the job done just fine.

Nike air zoom flight 98

Material – Most of the colorways that will release will feature a spandex shrouded upper whereas these feature a leather shrouded upper. Both will work perfectly fine but the leather will likely be more durable in the long run while the spandex versions will be more breathable… I'd take the spandex version next time around as the leather made these comparable to an oven once you got going. Other than that I thought the materials were great. I loved the mesh interior and synthetic lacing system. Not really much to complain about at all.

Fit – If there is one thing you can guarantee when hooping in a shoe with a shroud – besides the lack of ventilation – its that you are going to have a really awesome fit. I didn't feel as if zipping these up was 100% necessary but once you did use the zipper then you knew your feet weren't going anywhere. For a shoe designed in the 90's, this is pretty sweet. There are very few shoes from this era that have this great of a fit and lockdown… good thing too, wouldn't want to disappoint with a name like The Glove.

Ventilation – I've had dryer feet while swimming…

Support – The fit provides you with most of the support – which is great – while the reintroduced Monkey Paw actually does its job. Basically, it holds your heel into the back of the shoe and provides lateral support. Add in the shroud and you really don't need much else.

Overall – There are better performers out there but this is going to be a nostalgic shoe to play in for a lot of people… especially for people like myself that never had the chance to play in them the first time around. Surprisingly enough, I had more fun playing in them outdoors than I did indoors and I usually prefer indoor hooping. The only real drawback is the ventilation and I would hope that the spandex upper will help alleviate some of the moisture buildup… although I doubt it will help much.

The new generation might prefer to stick with their plastic uppers but for us older folks… The Glove came before the XX8 and it'll take more than crappy ventilation to keep us from lacing these up on-court one more time.

Great Review Nightwing! Definitely a stylish shoe that stands the test of time! However I have to say that while having to go outdoors to breaking the cushioning is a great idea for reviewing purposes, is but its still pretty disappointing. I know this is a retro but I am saying that most basketball shoes today are not much different such as the Lebron Soldier 7s. I sympathize with what put your body through in order to provide our community with performance reviews, but I still think its an issue because I for one will not take an expensive shoe outside which I bought primarily to play indoors, an subject them to that kind of wear and tear doesn't make any sense. I have one type of shoe to play outdoors in and another to play indoors.

I agree somewhat but you dont have to play in them outdoors and wear them down. All you have to do is shoot around in them and the heat along with your body weight will break in the shoe a lot faster than on an indoor court. Women have been known to wear their heels in the shower bc the heat breaks them faster than typical wear so they dont hurt their feet too badly so its not really a new concept. On the other hand, Zoom used to be a lot more comfortable and noticeable than it is now.

Yeah you're right it will break them in faster, but I just worry about grinding down the traction especially with how thin traction patterns can be nowadays especially on the Soldier 7s. What I usually do to break in a shoe is to jump and run around my house for a while lol so that when I get the the courts the shoe is a little more broken in.

I do the same thing usually but the heat (its been 80+ as of late here in the Bay) sped the process up tenfold. The rubbers used nowadays are really soft (new performance models) so if you wanted to try it Id suggest just wearing them outdoors to shoot around and be careful that you dont drag or grind your soles too much then clean them when you get home. Trust me, you'll feel a huge difference.

Or you could just do like I do, and hit the sauna. Do a few jumping jacks and what not and there you go. No wear and tear, and lots of heat. Quick and easy way to break in a shoe.

Sorry, couldn't reply directly to Nightwing above in regards to the rubber used on newer shoes. Why do they use softer rubber on new performance shoes these days?

Is it that much better, grip wise, playing indoors with it than if the same shoe had an XDR outsole?

Nike air zoom flight 98

Jules burn says

It's just money. Xdr is fine for indoor use, it can actually be better if the traction pattern is well designed. But go on nike Id and you'll see that you can't get Xdr soles in anything but ugly grey, even though they can easily colorize it. They just want you to buy two pairs or burn up your lebrons so you need a new pair sooner.

like what you said about the shoe really breaking in when outdoors being the culture of basketball sneakers actually is in my view the begining of sneakers/ outside shoes to begin with so yeah there are kicks being worn for style and sneakers for balling but dare i say. ok this is a large group of people wear sneakers just to have shoes and with the technology to have something comfortable to wear this sounds simple and it is but relevant to the modern evolution of the sneaker found in the basketball sneaker.

“Ventilation – I’ve had dryer feet while swimming…”

LOL. That sums it all up…

What I've noticed is that bigger guys tend to break in these new models with ease, perhaps since you are guard sized it takes you longer?
But once ya to unlocked zoom its hard to go back to anything else
^.^

Possibly but I've been wearing Zoom based sneakers since High School. I love the tech and its my favorite type of cushion besides Lunarlon when it comes to Nike tech. The Zoom is just different than it once was. I know Im not the only one that feels this way since I talk to a lot of other hoopers but I already assume that heavier set players will have a slightly easier time breaking in a shoe vs a smaller guy… that part is common sense lol.

Didn't really feel the zoom in these when playing. It's a shame they skimmed on the zoom in the retro because the OG felt much better. The lack of zoom ruined the shoe now. I don't mind the aesthetic changes so much as they're minor but nike sportswear managed to make a basketball shoe uncomfortable for basketball.
My feet were really uncomfortable. My soles had hotspots and and I kept feeling lumps in all sorts of places.
I obviously wasn't expecting it to perform like the XX8s but I would have been happy if they only performed like the originals did.

The Monkeypaw thing was great. I had 2 shoes with them, the first ‘the glove' which was very similar to this one except for a ‘flap with a strap' instead of the shroud. awesome shoes but the strap kept breaking.

I really, really hope they'll retro the second one i had though: the T-Bug, Tim Hardaway's only signature shoe. Which was basically this shoe but with less shroud, just a zipper in the middle (which worked better than the zipper on the gloves) and the monkeypaws. I remember them being extremely lightweight for that era too. Lovely foam/zoom setup too. And good looking!

Thomas Wood, 1st assistant chief for Le Roy Fire, a former chief and long-time volunteer with the company, can't remember a time when his department was called on to respond to back-to-back fires.

It didn't help that it was a fairly hot day and the second fire was fought from atop a metal roof.

His brother, Bill Wood, also a former chief, described the rooftop as "unbearably hot."

"That's why we called in Brockport and Avon and used the City's Fast Team as a regular fire unit," Wood said. "Most of our guys had already fought one fire. We were calling in extra units. Our guys were dropping from the heat."

The first fire was reported on Starr Road, Pavilion, at about 1:50 p.m. It involved a six-unit complex and a quick response by Pavilion and Le Roy firefighters helped contain the fire to a single apartment unit.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen area, according to Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Yaeger. The cause remains under investigation.

Nobody was home at the time the fire was reported and residents in two other units were evacuated, including one who was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom and awoken by Deputy Chris Parker.

A dog may have perished in the fire, though several other pets were rescued.

The second fire, at a plastics factory on Lent Avenue, Le Roy, was reported about 3:10 p.m.

Most of Le Roy's equipment hadn't even cleared the Pavilion scene yet.

The Lent Avenue fire was sparked by a welder making repairs to the roof of the factory.

The fire burned about 40 feet down, Wood said. It produced a bit of smoke, but little flame.

"It's just an odd to have two like hit that quick and have to use so many people," Wood said.

There's no damage estimate available yet for either fire.

Bergen, Stafford and Caledonia also responded to the Lent Avenue fire.

The response to Pavilion also included Stafford, Bethany and Alexander along with the Office of Emergency Management.

Town of Batavia was asked to stand in at Stafford's fire hall.

The seventh annual Dash in the Dark hosted at Oakfield-Alabama High School, where high school cross-country runners run their races at night under the lights, took place last Friday evening.

Thirty-four schools, more than 1,000 competitors from Section V and VI, and one from Pennsylvania, attended this year's event.

It's pretty much the "Super Bowl" of cross-country, said Peter Beuler, Oakfield-Alabama-Elba head coach, because the runners start and finish under the football stadium lights and have construction light towers along the course as well to guide them. It's very unique and the kids love it.

The course is a fast, flat, grassy, 1,600-meter loop around the school grounds. Each leg will run two loops, starting and ending inside the football stadium.

Nike air zoom flight 98

Teams consist of three runners. Each school can enter three teams in the Gold Race (fastest race) and unlimited teams in the Blue Race.

Teams will be split up into two divisions depending on school size.

Medals are awarded to the top 10 fastest individual times, both girls and boys, for both divisions.

Team trophies are given to the top three teams in both divisions in the Gold Race.

Team awards go to the top three teams in the Blue Race, for both divisions and genders.

Broad regional and national concern regarding institutional water quality prompted the Batavia City School District to voluntarily test the water in all of our school district buildings at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

While not a public water supply issue, as all public water supplies are subject to regular water quality testing, our district voluntarily took the proactive step of testing the water sources in each of our school buildings for lead concentrations as a precaution and out of abundance of care for our students and staff.

The District contracted with Leader Professional Services Inc. which collected multiple samples from locations in each building (for example, drinking fountains, kitchen sinks, classroom sinks, custodial closets, etc.).

The samples were then tested through a certified lab that follows protocols set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

We tested 353 fixtures throughout the District. Three fixtures did not meet the USEPA's guidelines. They are:

  1. A restroom wash sink at an outdoor bathroom at John Kennedy School;
  2. A classroom sink at the Robert Morris building in a room not currently used;
  3. A sink in the lunchroom at the Richmond Memorial Library.

Upon our receipt of these results, the affected sources were taken out of service and an investigation was implemented to correct these problems.

While we know that this information may cause some concern, the District has taken the necessary steps to address the situation and confirm the safety of water throughout the District. There is nothing that we take more seriously than the well-being of our students and staff.

Submitted photo of Franklin Davis, selected as the 2016 LeRoyan of the Year.

Botts-Fiorito Post #576, American Legion, Le Roy, takes great pride and pleasure in announcing Franklin Davis as its selection for the 2016 “LeRoyan of the Year Award."

The community has benefitted in countless ways from his 85-year-long residence in Le Roy, and "Frank" has loved and been proud of his hometown always.

Although Frank was not an active serviceman, both of his parents as well as all three brothers were. He did serve in the National Guard prior to college. As a result, Frank has always held our country in highest esteem. Friends point out that he usually has two flags flying in his yard on any given day.

Frank started out after college with a florist business in Le Roy, and then went on to work for Jones Chemicals, eventually as Director of Sales. Frank’s family consists of his wife Martha, and five children Selby, Benson, Hugh, Andrew and Hannah.

He is a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served on numerous committees, currently on the Church Maintenance Committee. He is an "over-50-year" member of the Le Roy Fire Department, as well as the Olive Branch Lodge ' F&AM. Frank is also a member of the Oatka Hose Company as an active firefighter recently honored for more than 50 years of continuous service.

Frank has served on committees devoted to making Le Roy a better place to live, including the Planning Committee, a life member of the Le Roy Historical Society and the Le Roy Business Council. Frank served as President of the MacPelah Cemetery Board, and also served as the Disaster Chairmen of the Local Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was active in the Republican Committee for years. Frank was a member of the Le Roy Rotary as well.

There are two personal qualities that Frank possesses which stand out and make him a unique and exceptionally qualified person in terms of qualifying for this award. The first is his outstanding ability to be helpful in times of need or difficulty. Whether a friend has a need, or the community, an organization he belongs to or not, a family member, or a dog. In addition, is his best quality is his friendship. Frank makes friends and leaves a good impression wherever he goes. His cheerful demeanor makes others comfortable and he is the first to ask others how THEY are doing. He has many lifelong friends and makes new ones often.

The bottom line is that Frank Davis will be there for you, and he will be the best friend you have ever had (as long as you don’t mind his cigar once in a while).

The 48th annual Award Dinner will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8th. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:45 p.m. at the American Legion, 53 W. Main St. Le Roy.

Tickets for this year’s Award Dinner are available at the American Legion. Cost is $20 per person.

The young man whose body was found on Labor Day in the lake at DeWitt Recreation Area has been identified by police as 25-year-old Kyeongseop Woodhams.

Woodhams is originally from South Korea and notification of the next of kin required the assistance of Sen. Charles Schumer's office.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and investigators are awaiting results from toxicology tests to see if that provides any clues.

There were no signs of trauma.

Investigators are asking that anybody who may have seen Woodhams between Sept. 3 and Sept. 5 to contact Det. Todd Crossett at (585) 345-6353.

The park opened at 6 a.m. on Labor Day and a fisherman discovered Woodham's body at 8:54 a.m. and immediately called police.

The body was partially submerged.

A scuba team searched the area where the body was found, in the southeast corner of the lake, behind the land bridge created by historically low water levels, but investigators have not revealed if any items of interest were located.

No further information has been released about Woodhams.

The Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter estimates that across Genesee County, approximately 2,000 residents have Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. It’s further believed that an additional 6,000 family members and friends provide some kind of care for those with impaired cognition.

All those people, as well as professional care providers, have access to the no-cost resources of the WNY Chapter, which include educational programs, support groups, online access to information, support and medical professionals across the county, and other vital programs and services.

The major means of financial support for these services is the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. which will take place in Batavia on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Genesee County Nursing Home (278 Bank St.) starting at 9 a.m.

Hundreds of participants are expected to take part in this important, informative and entertaining fundraiser. A committee of local residents and business and community leaders has been planning Walk for months, helping secure donations of goods and services, recruiting team members and leaders and promoting the event across the county while raising awareness about dementia and the WNY Chapter.

Registration and fundraising can be accomplished online at alz.org/WNY or via a quick phone call to 1.800.272.3900. All registered participants have access to refreshments, entertainment and basket and 50/50 raffles.

Day-of registration is also available from 9-10 a.m. and fundraising can continue through the end of October to qualify for incentives, which include a purple Walk to End Alzheimer’s T-shirt and a gold medal.

The continuing availability of Chapter resources and important research to find ways to prevent, slow and cure Alzheimer’s disease is also funded through the generous support of the corporate world.

Information and easy registration is available online at alz.org/WNY or by calling 1.800.272.3900.

While some have expressed enthusiasm for Advanced Micro Devices ‘s (AMD )
latest microprocessor offering, “Zen ,” not everyone is willing to call a turn in the years-long loss of share by the company at the hands of Intel (INTC ).

In contrast to Canaccord ‘s Matthew Ramsay. who wrote two weeks ago that AMD is “Back in the CPU game” against Intel, Christopher Danely with Citigroup. who has a Neutral rating on shares of Intel, today reiterates a Sell rating on shares of AMD, writing that with its “Kaby Lake” family of processors, Intel remains a “step-function ahead of AMD Zen when Zen chips are released in Q416.”

Danely questions the benchmark stats that AMD presented to promote Zen's capabilities relative to Intel's microprocessors:

The AMD controlled benchmark compared an engineering sample of a Zen processor that has not been released yet against a three-month old Intel processor, with both chips clocked at 3.0 Ghz. We would note the maximum speed for the Intel chip is 3.2 GHz. The result showed AMD completing the benchmark 2% faster than Intel, implying higher CPU efficiency on a “clock for clock” basis. AMD kept both 8 core chips at the same clock speed of 3.0 Ghz, below the native clock speed of the Intel chip. The benchmark result showed the Zen Summit Ridge processor completing the Blender rendering benchmark in 48.07 seconds, 2% ahead of Intel Broadwell-E chip’s time of 49.06 seconds. We note this is only one benchmark using a custom workload performed at an AMD event under controlled conditions, and therefore cannot be verified by third parties and does not represent expected results under all workloads.

Intel is going to benefit from its process technology lead versus AMD's manufacturing partner, Global Foundries. which has a “spotty track record”:

Intel released its new Kaby Lake chips on an improved 14+nm process this month, featuring a 15% performance improvement over its Skylake chips. We expect independent benchmarks to show Intel’ performance is a step function ahead of AMD Zen when Zen chips are released in 4Q16. During IDF 2016 in August, Mike Bohr, Intel Technology and Manufacturing Group Director, introduced a new 14+ process, which is an optimized version of Intel’s standard 14nm process used in both Broadwell and Skylake platforms. The 14+ process provides a 12% performance improvement over the standard 14nm process. The resulting Kaby Lake chips deliver up to 12% faster productivity performance and 19% faster web performance over comparable Skylake chips [. ] After several of delays and eventually failing to develop 20nm and 14nm on its own, GlobalFoundries entered into a partnership agreement with Samsung in April 2014 to adopt Samsung’s 14nm FinFET process. Despite using the same tools, recipes, and materials as Samsung’s 14nm process, products built on GlobalFoundries’ 14nm did not appear until earlier this year, roughly one year after Samsung released its Exynos 7420 SoC built on its 14nm process. Additionally, since the partnership agreement with Samsung does not include 10nm or lower nodes, we think the technology gap between AMD and Intel will widen again once Intel migrates to 10nm next year.

AMD stock today is down 20 cents, or 3%, at $5.74, amidst a broad sell off in U.S. markets.

Apple ’s (AAPL ) iPhone 7 goes on sale at retail this Friday, which means all the people who were handed one at last week’s debut have turned in their reviews today.

And there’s plenty of bitching. The upshot is this is a worthwhile upgrade for those who’ve been waiting to buy a phone since buying an iPhone 6, but there are also frustrations.

Re/code ’s Walt Mossberg writes that the choice of whether to buy the thing is “tougher than in the past.”

“I’m impressed. But I’m also annoyed. And impatient. All at the same time. Let me explain.”

He likes the new optical zoom on the camera, and the performance of iOS 10 on the new hardware, And he really likes the increased battery life. And he’s not miffed by the new non-button home button:

Personal computer trends have been better of late, according to recent commentary about August manufacturing of systems, but it may not be as positive for Intel (INTC ) as you might think, according to bears.

For example, Morgan Stanley ’s Joseph Moore reiterates an Underweight rating on Intel stock this morning, and a $31 price target, arguing that any health in PCs currently is just system makers such as HP (HPQ ) building systems ahead of schedule to get around rising commodity prices.

This is robbing future chip sales for Intel :

We see PC demand as lackluster, but believe a rising commodity price environment for memory and panels is leading to modest 3q system inventory build. We tweak 3q numbers higher, offset by lower 4q. We prefer buying commodity stocks/supply chain directly vs. buying Intel at current levels; UW. There's a bit of a disconnect between demand commentary and the supply chain. Demand commentary remains muted by all accounts, yet notebook ODM data and motherboard data has been materially stronger than expected in the last two months.

Shares of Internet radio pioneers Pandora Media (P ) are down 28 cent,s or 2%, at $14.02, even though the company this morning finally announced the long-awaited direct deals with record labels, something analysts have been expecting could lead to the next stage of the company’s business, a streaming music model.

Announcing the signing of deals with Sony ’s (SNE ) Sony Music, with Universal. and with other labels, Pandora said the deals will “bring new products to market that enable enhanced subscription services.”

Though the stock is down, this is just what the bulls were waiting for, and they’re upbeat.

J.P. Morgan ’s Doug Anmuth reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares, writing that “This morning’s announcement was largely anticipated and we continue to believe that the on- demand product should diversify P’s revenue sources & expand its TAM as discussed in our report last week.”

Shares of chip giant Texas Instruments (TXN ) are down 27 cents, or 0.4%, at $67.67, despite an upbeat note this morning from Bernstein ’s Stacy Rasgon. who raised his rating on the shares to Outperform from Market Perform, and raised his price target to $80 from $70, arguing the company’s gross profit margin can go higher than the Street expects.

Margin can be a full three points higher than the Street is expecting, he predicts:

Gross margin expansion has been a core component of the TXN thesis, but the Street has made it a habit to under-model the company's GM evolution over the last few years. We think this trend is likely to continue. Current consensus models very little future gross margin expansion, with only about a point of upside from current levels through 2018; we believe these expectations remain too low.

T-Mobile chief executive John Legere chats with people on Periscope about Apple's iPhone 7 debut.

Nike air zoom flight 98

Shares of Apple (AAPL ) are up $2.72, or 2.6%, at $108.16, after encouraging remarks overnight from T-Mobile (TMUS ) and Sprint (S ) about an uptick they’re seeing in pre-orders on their networks of the iPhone 7. unveiled last week.

Apple said it would not disclose pre-orders this time around. as it has in previous years, given that sales are now gated not by demand but by supply.

That has led to some peculiar ways for the Street to gauge that demand. For example, yesterday, T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere took to his Periscope feed to tell the assembled that the weekend’s pre-orders since the phone went on sale early Friday have been four times the rate the company saw in 2014 with the debut of the iPhone 6.

“This has been the biggest launch ever for us.”

“It’s like four times bigger for us than the iPhone 6 at the pre-order stage.”

Sprint for its part said that there was a “greater than 375% year-over-year increase in iPhone pre-orders.”

T-Mobile shares are down 65 cents, or 1.4%, at $45.28, while shares of Sprint are down 18 cents, or 3%, at $6.74.

The Street, which abhors a vacuum, this morning is eating it up.

Drexel Hamilton ’s Brian White reiterates a Buy rating on Apple stock, and a $185 price target, writing that “given that Apple will not be releasing opening weekend sales for the iPhone 7/7 Plus, investors will be searching for any incremental information that provides color around the strength of this cycle.”

And so, “We are very encouraged by these strong pre-order reports from T-Mobile and Sprint, combined with the best August ever for our Apple Monitor that we discussed last week,” he writes, referring to his own data analysis.

Trip Chowdhry with Global Equities Research is upbeat on Apple, writing that despite what Legere said, it’s probably the case that strength in iPhone is broad-based across all the carriers in the U.S. including Verizon Communications (VZ ) and AT&T (T ), not just T-Mobile:

In 2014, T-Mobile had a market share of 15%; and we assume in 2016, T-Mobile market share will increase to 20%, an increase of 33% over 2014 If T-Mobile had 1 iPhone 6 pre-ordered in 2014, then solely based on market share wins, T-Mobile would have had 1.33 iPhone 7 pre-ordered and not 4 iPhone 7′s pre-ordered, as the T-Mobile CEO indicated on the Periscope So, we concluded that the strength in iPhone 7 pre-orders is not isolated to only T-Mobile, but all the carriers may experience strength in iPhone 7 pre-orders over iPhone 6 pre-orders, however the strength may vary.

And R.W. Baird ’s William Power reiterates a Neutral rating on T-Mobile shares, and a Buy rating on Apple, writing that for the former, it “signals a continuation of positive momentum,” and “we expect T-Mobile to continue to take share,” while for the latter, “given questions around iPhone 7 innovation, we view this as a positive indicator, though driven partly by T-Mobile promotions.”

Shares of Netflix (NFLX ) are down $1.74, or 1.8%, at $97.31, after Macquarie ’s Tim Nollen and Bench Schachter this morning issued a team report on the state of the streaming video industry, arguing that both they and Amazon.com (AMZN ) “are running into strong incumbent pay TV operators and new SVOD competitors in many markets.”

The analysts cut their rating on Netflix to Underperform from Neutral, arguing that “in the near term we see many local operators having built out streaming services that will limit Netflix’s market penetration, and we expect Netflix could struggle to balance sub growth with the high content costs.”

They still like Amazon stock, writing that “a favorite long-term idea in the internet space,” given “the flywheel effect of Prime combined with AWS should enable it to maintain its dominate position in two industries.”

And the analysts have favorable views on several local video providers. including Eros International Media (EROS ), the maker of Bollywood films that has its own “over-the-top” video service:

Apple ’s (AAPL ) latest iPhone. number seven, unveiled last Wednesday. went on sale Friday morning on a pre-order basis, and although Apple said this time around it’s not revealing any pre-sales numbers. that hasn’t stopped the Street from prognosticating on how the device is doing.

Piper Jaffray ’s Gene Munster. who has an Overweight rating on Apple stock, and a $151 price target, writing that “Overall we remain comfortable with our thinking that the iPhone 7 will be closer to the iPhone 6 than iPhone 6S and continue to expect 11% y/y revenue growth for the iPhone 7 cycle, compared to down 9% for the 6S.”

A short while ago I spoke with HP's (HPQ ) chief executive Dion Wiesler. and his CFO Cathie Lesjak and printing and personal systems general manager Enrique Lores. regarding today's announced acquisition of Samsung Electronics ‘s (005930KS ) printing division.

The Street likes this, with HP shares today up 49 cents, or 3.5%, at $14.44. But so far, it's mostly the bears on the stock chiming in. Citigroup ‘s Jim Suva. who is Neutral on HP shares, writes, “Overall we view the acquisition as a positive but note the secular growth challenges in the print business overall.”

Another bear, Abhey Lamba with Mizuho Securities. writes “We believe the transaction does not fundamentally alter our stance that end-market demand is likely to remain challenged in the n-t.”

Nike air zoom flight 98

“Further, the transaction likely pushes out increased capital returns, which investors are keen to see, due to balance sheet impact.”

In the face of that skepticism, Weisler was upbeat about the fact that the company was today showing the outcome thus far of the company's work to date — nine months — of the partnership with Samsung, a new line of machines targeted for the so-called A3 market, the corporate copier market. HP has about 40% of the printer market, known as “A4,” but less than 5% of the A3 copier market. The portfolio will be rolled out in stages, culminating in full availability by next summer, before the Samsung deal closes.

But what about people who never got fired for buying Xerox (XRX )? I asked.

“You've got to be bold, you've got to be ambitious, you've got to not be cautious,” said Weisler, speaking of taking “the new technology suited for the modern age,” rather than copier technology that's been around for decades. In particular, Weisler cited the tons and tons of parts in a copier that drive up the costs of servicing those machines.

Wells Fargo ’s chip analyst David Wong today reiterates an Outperform rating on shares of Intel (INTC ) and several other PC-related chip names, citing data for the month of August from Taiwan-based assemblers of notebook computers that showed a “solid” recovery.

“We think a recovery in global chip sales may have begun,” writes Wong.

He’s “positive on the semiconductor sector overall,” he writes, and “We think that several chip stocks with exposure to the computer (PC and server) segments still have very reasonable valuations, and so, in our view, could well be significant outperformers in an environment of improving computer demand,” including Intel, AMD (AMD ) and Micron (MU ).

Wong cites the upbeat data point for August:
